Chairperson of Maldives Democratic Party's (MDP) May 6 Committee and parliament representative for Vilufushi constituency Hassan Afeef has confirmed that the May 6 assassination attempt on former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed was funded.
Speaking on SanguTV on Tuesday night, Afeef stated there must be people that funded the attack as he does not believe the attack could have been conducted without funding. "They rented an apartment, bought a motorcycle. Who gave them that money?"
Afeef questioned why the government failed to notice when four of the suspects acquired income support allowance through fraudulent means. "At the moment, I suspect they [distributors of income support allowance] funded the attack", said Afeef.
Afeef, a former Home Minister, has previously claimed he was informed the attack was a USD 3 million "task". However, police have been reiterating that their investigation shows no proof that the attack was funded.
