It has been revealed that three suspects arrested for their involvement in the May 6 terror attack against former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed have received MVR 60,000 from the state as income support.
Mujaz Ahmed and Thahumeen Ahmed, two of the four suspects who have been charged, have received income support allowance. The information was apparent in a list of names and ID numbers of those who received the income support allowance published by the Ministry of Finance.
Data from the ministry shows that in 2020, Mujaz received income support allowance in September, October, November, and December. He received the funds as he was not receiving payment for his work as a mechanical worker at Attic International Pvt Ltd. Mujaz received a total of MVR 20,000 in monthly payments of MVR 5,000.
Thahumeen Ahmed, who previously worked for Young Whales Watersports Center, received MVR 5,000 per month in July, August, and September of 2020. The income support allowance he collected as he was no longer receiving an income totaled MVR 15,000.
The next suspect to receive state support was Mohamed Thasleem, who police suspected was behind the attack. Thasleem was arrested while in Addu for playing a major role in planning the attack. Thasleem received income support allowance in August, September, October, November, and December of 2020. The monthly payments of MVR 5,000 added up to a total of MVR 25,000.
It is unknown whether the suspects have received income support allowance this year as the Ministry of Economic Development has only published details of those who received the allowance in 2020.
Police have previously stated that some of the May 6 attack suspects have received income support allowance. However, police claimed that the attack was not funded by anyone.
