Addu City Council has warned of several fake social media accounts impersonating Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar.
The council on Monday announced that there are numerous social media accounts impersonating the mayor and spreading false information. The statement listed Mayor Ali Nizar's official accounts.
While the council has made its statement, parody accounts of the mayor have been operating on Facebook and Twitter. The accounts often post content presenting situations in Addu as humorous. It is worth noting that the accounts do not claim to be the mayor, and identify themselves as "parody accounts".
Twitter and Facebook guidelines allow for the operation of parody accounts of famous persons. The practice is quite common in other countries. However, Mayor Nizar has been angered by the accounts and has reported them to the police. As the accounts are not in violation of any laws, police have not taken up the case.
