The State of Public Health Emergency announced due to the COVID-19 pandemic has been extended yet again. Although the state of emergency has been extended, many have been claiming that the situation in Maldives is no longer dire.
The state of public health emergency has been extended for the 17th time, until September 1.
A declaration signed by Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem read that due to the possible danger of the rampant spread of COVID-19, the state of health emergency announced on March 12, 2020, is still in effect.
The ministry’s statement further read that the state of emergency has been extended as the Director-General of Public Health believed extra measures are required to minimize danger and ensure the public’s health and safety.
While the rate of positive cases has significantly slowed, the number of patients seeking treatment in hospitals has also decreased. Some COVID-19 health facilities now remain vacant.
