A message sent to the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) National Majilis WhatsApp group from former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has revealed that he has ceased drinking.
Following a website’s claims that the May 6 attack left him mentally unfit, former President Nasheed shared with the group a document regarding his psychological evaluation conducted by a psychiatrist in the United Kingdom.
After the evaluation to determine whether he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after the attack, the psychiatrist observed Nasheed has no indicative symptoms. The document also highlighted that quitting alcohol of his own volition must help with sleep dramatically.
A member of the MDP National Majilis confirmed to TMJ that the document was shared with the WhatsApp group. The member stated that the document was soon deleted.
Consumption of alcohol by locals is a crime in the Maldives and it is forbidden in Islam. The fact that Nasheed is a heavy drinker is well known. In 2012 after he resigned from the presidency, authorities found bottles of alcohol in his official residence.
