It has been revealed that former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed did not cooperate with the investigation into the May 6 assassination attempt.
Police have been paying special attention to the investigation into the assassination attempt of one of the powers of the state. There are currently 10 suspects in police custody, arrested during the investigation on suspicion of conducting and initiating the idea for the attack.
However, the target of the attack former President Nasheed has yet to provide an official statement this long after the attack. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz informed the press that the first attempt to obtain a statement from Nasheed while he sought treatment at ADK Hospital was unsuccessful as he refused.
Attempts were made to extract a statement for the investigation after Speaker Nasheed traveled abroad for further treatment. Riyaz claimed they received no answer despite stating they had no problem accepting the former president’s statement via phone or email. While he has still not provided an official statement to police, President Nasheed has given an interview to an Indian media outlet.
Nasheed has also been active in the political scene, posting often on his several social media platforms. He has also taken part in the parliament’s Ask Speaker program to answer questions from the public. Many have criticized the former president for his failure to provide a statement.
