Nasheed Claims Govt. Responsible for MDP Failure in Council Elections

Leader of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that MDP failed to secure the majority in this year’s local council elections due to the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was elected on the party’s ticket and was supported by former President Nasheed.
When asked about the failure in the Male’ City Council elections during an interview with India’s Wion News, Nasheed claimed that citizens will take note if one’s own beliefs and regulations are being adapted to accommodate a minority. He stated that the party lost the elections as MDP supporters refused to vote, believing the government is straying from the public’s core beliefs and ideas.
“The public is unhappy because of this. They wanted to give a clear message to the leadership, especially in Male’”, said Nasheed.
The former president reiterated that the government must change its course and act according to MDP’s beliefs and ideas. This is the first time Nasheed has directly attributed the loss in the Male’ City Council elections to the government’s carelessness. The supermajority of the Male’ City council that was previously occupied by the MDP supermajority has now been occupied by the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
