Former Minister of Health Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim declared that in the past three years, the government has not sponsored the specialization of a single doctor.
During an interview with online media Sun, the former Minister revealed that the health sector in the Maldives has been neglected for the past three years. While the previous administration funded the specialization of numerous doctors, the current government has not done so.
"The state has not sponsored any efforts to prepare specialists. The state funded close to 70 people to become specialists within five years. One may think 70 is a small number. However, it is much more than the number sent in the past ten years", said Nazim.
He further stated that when former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom came into power, the health sector was in a pitiful state. Highlighting that most islands did not even have a doctor, Nazim claimed that President Yameen assured every island, however small, would have a doctor.
According to Nazim, President Yameen established pharmacies on every island, constructed Dharumavantha Hospital, introduced a high-standard physiotherapy department, and began construction of a diagnostic laboratory.
He added that President Yameen also helped make the Equatorial Hospital in Addu functional, and funded the essential equipment.
