Lawyers of former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom have recused themselves from the case after Police proceeded to reinvestigate the case of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll after the matter was investigated and sent for prosecution, despite repeated claims that it is unlawful.
While all media in Maldives reported the case was sent for prosecution, the Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) did not declare the news to be false. The lawyer for President Yameen has repeatedly reminded the police that re-investigating a matter after the conclusion of an investigation and sending the case to be prosecuted is unlawful.
However, police claimed they must proceed, despite all advice. Former President Yameen's lawyers, declaring the investigation as unlawful, have left the former president and recused themselves from the matter.
Lawyer for the former president and former Vice President Dr. Jameel tweeted that he has left the case as police are attempting to re-investigate a case that has already been investigated, refused to provide the opportunity to prove they were working beyond legal limitations and failed to protect the rights of the suspect.
