Maldives Police Service has summoned opposition leader and former President Yameen today.
Former Vice President and member of President Yameen's legal team Dr. Mohamed Jameel stated that the former president was summoned to police as part of the investigation into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Company (MMPRC) corruption. The former Vice President informed Dhiyares that President Yameen was summoned to police as a distraction from all other major issues in the country.
Dr. Jameel further revealed that the former President was summoned as the Asset Recovery Commission and other investigative authorities have found no leads in the MMPRC corruption case.
While President Yameen is facing multiple charges for the MMPRC scandal, one of the rulings from the Criminal Court and High Court has been appealed to the Supreme Court. Supreme Court has yet to schedule a hearing on the matter.
Court proceedings for an additional charge are currently underway. The hearings have been halted due to COVID-19.
Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and Managing Director of MMPRC Abdulla Ziyath confessed to their involvement in the MMPRC corruption and accepted a plea deal with the government, agreeing to testify against former President Yameen. Although Adeeb and Ziyath were sentenced to prison, they still remain in their homes.
