I Will Be the MDP Candidate for 2023 Presidential Elections: Nasheed

Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has declared that if a presidential election takes place in 2023, he will be a candidate.

Former President Nasheed made his declaration during the "Ask Speaker" program arranged by the parliament. He stated that if Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) will hold primaries for the election, he will compete as a presidential candidate. However, he stressed the need to establish a parliamentary system and claimed he would compete to become the Prime Minister.

According to former President Nasheed, the system of Maldives will be established before 2023. He claimed he would become the Prime Minister after the system is established.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is also in agreement, said Nasheed.

It is worth noting that President Solih previously stated that it is too early to be speaking of changes to the system.
