Parliament representative for Kendhoo constituency Ali Hussain declared that foreign countries must not influence the Maldivian government's operations.
Ali Hussain's statement was following the Indian High Commission's request to the Maldivian government to reprimand Dhiyares and the Maldives Journal regarding an article.
While the Indian High Commission has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take action against individuals and media critical of India, the Deputy Indian High Commissioner contacted the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions and MP for Meedhoo constituency Rozaina Adam to investigate the matter.
Without discussions amount the Committee, Rozaina, in the name of the committee, ordered the Maldives Media Council (MMC) to investigate. Some members of parliament have contacted and pressured the MMC to reprimand Dhiyares and TMJ.
On the matter, Ali Hussain tweeted that Maldives is an independent, capable nation.
Additionally, he claimed that Maldivians must be the ones to judge the legality of articles published by Maldivian news and journals. The government has been attempting to penalize Dhiyares and TMJ.
The two statements released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday included baseless accusations against Dhiyares and TMJ.
Ruling party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) also released a statement on Friday with false allegations against Dhiyares and TMJ, and potentially endangered the co-founder of the media, mentioning him by name.
TMJ has alerted international journalism associations on the matter involving the government and MDP.
