Sources have revealed that a lead activist for Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to bomb the Indian High Commission in Maldives.
The suspect, Mohamed Inad, was a candidate representing MDP in the primaries for the 2019 parliamentary election. He has numerous posts in support of former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed on his Facebook profile.
Despite repeated inquiries, police refused to reveal the suspect's identity to reporters and refused to comment.
The suspect used an account under the alias "Royal Hussain Thakuru" on Twitter to post the threat. The government made many attempts to pin the blame onto journalists.
A statement from police read that reports published by some news outlets incite acts to harm the lives of foreign diplomats in the Maldives. However, police refused to elaborate on what news outlets or articles.
