Majority party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) advocates for action to be taken against those who claim the May 6 attack on former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed was orchestrated.
During a discussion regarding the May 6 incident at an MDP National Majilis event commemorating the party's 16th anniversary, Member of Parliament Imthiyaz Fahmy called for those who claim the attack was orchestrated to be reprimanded.
He stated that members of the public must be aware of the opposition's attempts to minimize the seriousness of the attack.
"I noticed a tweet saying the attack was exaggerated, and that the explosion was really just the pop of a tiny balloon. We need to investigate these issues and penalize these individuals", said Imthiyaz.
MP Imthiyaz encouraged party members to stand up against hate aimed at former President Nasheed.
Despite the MP's call to action, the Constitution of the Maldives allows for freedom of expression that does not contradict any tenet of Islam. People are permitted to share their thoughts on the attack on President Nasheed.
