PG Shameem Comments on Bill Criminalizing Hate

In response to a bill to criminalize hate crimes, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem asked for a law that will yield results.
At a press conference today, Dhiyares inquired whether the bill will have clear articles and clauses in the Constitution of Maldives. The PG stated he would share his thoughts with the parliament.
Shameem claimed he was writing a detailed response to the parliament regarding the philosophy of the Constitution and the proposed draft. The parliament addressed a letter to the PG for his opinion. He refused to provide additional details at present, as his letter to the parliament will be publicized.
“My only request is for a bill to be practical, able to be acted upon, and to yield the intended result”.
He spoke on the revision of existing laws, stressing that revising a law before it was tried and tested was unwise. The recent alteration to the Anti-Terrorism Act was submitted before the previous one was tested in court.
Scholars and citizens express great concern as the new bill may cause difficulties in banishing hate.
