The VIP terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), which was developed under the airport expansion project initiated by President Yameen's administration will be officially opened in the coming days.
The terminal constructed under a USD 1 billion venture with VIA is nearing completion, making last-minute arrangements before its introduction.
Previously, the launch was scheduled to be at the end of the month, but it is still under construction. The building is in the back of an existing VIP terminal.
The four-story building designed by Yuji Yamazaki Architecture PLLC (YYA) has private cabins and check-in counters.
Sources estimate the VIA development project may be over USD 1 billion. The 3,400-meter runway constructed under the venture was valued at USD 373 million (MVR 5.7 billion).
It is worth noting that a brand new seaplane terminal valued at USD 40 million (MVR 616 million) has yet to be opened, despite construction having concluded two years ago.
