Doctor of Internal Medicine at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Dr. Mohamed Ali has advised caution as reinfection of Covid-19 has been identified amid the current surge of cases gripping the Maldives.
Dr. Mohamed Ali, who is one of the foremost experts battling Covid-19 in the Maldives, revealed to local media outlet “Adhadhu” that while he is unsure of the exact number, cases of reinfection are being observed in the Maldives.
The doctor also revealed that while a definitive reason for reinfection has not been identified as of yet, it can be assumed that this is caused by a new variant or strain of the virus. However, he cannot be certain that this is the case due to the lack of investigative reports on the matter so far, said Dr. Mohamed Ali.
As such, doctors are urging the public not to become lackadaisical about preventative and safety measures after recovering from a bout of the virus, as it is entirely possible that they may test positive twice if adequate care is not taken.
Amid the ongoing surge of cases in the country, doctors have stated that there is a new variant of Covid-19 spreading in the Maldives. However, they haven’t yet revealed whether this new variant emerged from the Maldives or was imported from another country.
Even with the restrictive measures imposed in the Maldives at present, more than 1000 people continue to test positive every single day. And while there are 252 patients admitted to and cared for at hospitals across the country, the death toll has risen to 157.
