President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted his ability to fulfill his campaign promises and complete projects during his presidency. Speaking at a campaign event today, the President acknowledged that the pandemic has forced his administration to prioritize efforts to save lives and restore normalcy, rather than focusing on other planned initiatives.
"I came to power with a lot of promises and a plan to fulfill them, but due to COVID-19, some things had to be put on hold. In the budget, our priority at that time was to do what needs to be done to save the lives of the people and bring them back to a peaceful life," said President Solih.
The President also highlighted that despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, his administration has been able to accomplish a significant amount of work across the country in the nearly two years that he has been in office. "But in the nearly two years that we got it, we have been able to do a lot of work across the country that no government has done in the last five years," he said.
This statement from President Solih comes amid criticism from the public and opposition parties for the numerous unfinished projects by his government. However, President Solih has been using the excuse of not having a full four years to rule as an explanation for these unfinished projects. It remains to be seen how the public will respond to this explanation and if it will have any impact on his re-election campaign.
