Nasheedh's Former Lawyer Safa to Be Appointed to the Police Board

President Nasheedh’s previous legal counsel Safa Shareef’s name has been approved by People’s Majlis' Committee on Security Services for a vote by parliament to be appointed as a member of the public to the Police Board being formed under the New Police Service Act.
Other members of the public such as Mohamed Imran Shareef, Ahmed Usaid Adam, Aishath Rasheedh, Hawwa Reena Hassan and Ibrahim Thaufeeq Moonis applied for this slot. Two-thirds of the committee voted to submit Safa’s name for a vote to Majlis floor. Since majority of this committee is held by MDP it is likely that Safa will the favorable choice in this scenario.
Safa Shareef is the ex-wife of Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and is currently married to the President’s photographer Munshid. She runs a law firm with Majlis Member for Thulhaadhoo Constituency Hisaan Hussain. She is still a shareholder of ‘Hisaan and Safa LLP’.
Under the New Police Act, the Police Board being formed will be granted significant authority. During the first four months of the formation of the Police Board, they must make decisions regarding the service of all ranks above Superintendent excluding the Commissioner of Police under any sort of suspicion.
The board consists of seven members, two of which will be appointed by the President, three of which are educated and qualified members from any technical field. The other member of the public appointed to the board is Hamid Abdul Ghafoor. Hamid is was arrested under alleged substance abuse and refused to comply to provide a urine sample to test for substances.
