Hamid Abdul Ghafoor has been selected for the Police Board. The selection had been made by the Parliament’s National Security Committee, from a list of 5 civilian applicants.
In a meeting held today, Hamid was selected by a majority vote of the Committee.
Hamid Abdul Ghafoor had previously served as an MP for South-Henveiru. As a sitting MP, he had been arrested by the Police while he was in a state of intoxication in Hondaidhoo. On being asked by the Police to submit an urine sample, he had shut himself up inside the Majlis secretariat and had refused to come out.
The Police Board will guide the process of appointing the Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police. The members of the Board are also mandated to provide legal advice to the Minister. The Board consists of 7 members.
In addition to the civilian members, two positions are for technical experts, and two more positions are to be filled by Presidential appointment.
