Opposition's demonstration

Protestors arrested under suspicion of attacking police officers released

Two protestors who were arrested under suspicion of assaulting police officers were fined and released from custody.
From the demonstrations being organized by the opposition coalition against enslavement of the country, twenty-five protestors were arrested last Friday. Among those detained were Ahmed Nimal, President of People's National Congress.
All protestors who were detained were released the same night on Friday in exception of the two protestors who were remanded in suspicion of assault.
As reported in One Online, a police media officer stated that the two protesters remanded in suspicion of assault were released after being fined for protesting against HPA regulations instead of being taken to court to increase the remand period. Police will be investigating the matter despite the protestors' release.
Due to the increase in number of COVID19 cases in Male', HPA has banned gatherings of more than 5 people and public functions. Police have warned that actions will be taken against those who go against the measures in place.
Police have also actively made efforts to disperse and disrupt the demonstrations before they start by patrolling in numbers through protest routes and by surrounding the opposition office. Opposition coalition have been carrying out these demonstrations since the beginning of January, every Friday.
