Govt Decided to Not Allocate 1-Room Flats for Social Housing: Committee

The report released by the Parliamentary Committee on State-Owned Enterprises states that STELCO had constructed 144 single-room housing units for the Yameen administration’s social housing scheme.
The report pointed out that the flats of the first four floors of each tower constructed by STELCO had been set to be sold to the government at a set price. The report states that a total 72 flats in two towers built by STELCO had been set to be sold for the government.
However, the Solih administration had decided and informed STELCO that the government had decided that it would not be buying the flats.
The Yameen administration had decided that the single-room flats would be allocated to newlyweds and the disabled, among others, through the Hiyaa social housing scheme. All of the units had been allocated by the end of President Yameen’s term. A Flat Committee set up by President Solih had controversially revised the allocations.
Mohamed Aslam, the Housing Minister, has incorrectly claimed that the single-room housing units “did not exist”.
