Ali Zaid, who works as a lecturer at the Maldives National University and frequently praises President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Twitter, has received a Hiyaa flat.
Ali Zaid was assigned to a flat under the H7 category; which is exclusively for married people between the ages of 18 and 40.
In the first evaluation made by the previous administration, Ali Zaid had received a flat after scoring 63 points on his application. He had been given 13 points based on his current living conditions, 40 points for the size of his family, and 10 points for the duration of his employment.
However, President Solih’s Flat Committee had granted him 20.4 points for his current living conditions, raising his total score to 70.4.
The Flat Committee had been established by President Solih on the pretext of rooting out “corruption” in the flat allocations made by the previous administration.
Even though Ali Zaid has been assigned a flat, there are several families who have been denied a flat under the H7 category who currently live in squalid conditions.
The Hiyaa housing programme is a construction project of 7,000 housing units initiated by President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. The units had been distributed by the end of his term.
There are reports that in addition to his salary, Ali Zaid receives a monthly stipend of USD$ 800 from a foreign government.
