Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that the reports of a rape case in a resort in the country were untrue.
The Agency stated that this was an assault rather than a rape.
MPS tonight stated that no evidence was found from their investigation to back the claims of the alleged rape, first reported in media sources.
However, MPS added that they had received a complaint from the alleged victim's family. The complaint stated that the victim, an intern in a resort, was assaulted by a male expatriate employed in the said resort. MPS noted that the case is being investigated by the Family and Child Protection wing of the agency.
MPS had refused to corroborate the nationality of the assaulter but said he had left the country. The Maldives Journal understands the assaulter is an Indian national.
