Government spends MVR 132 million on travel

The state has spent MVR 132 million on travelling expenses between 1st January to 17th December of this year.
The figures have been published in the weekly state financial statistics report published by the Ministry of Finance. While MVR 132 million has been spent for travel up to 17th December 2020, MVR 207 million was spent during the same period last year.
This year’s travel-related expenditure has decreased mostly due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has restricted travel. However, several ministers have started traveling abroad when the country’s borders reopened on 15th July.
State dignitaries and officials of state-owned companies are also travelling to various islands.
The government has budgeted MVR 237.8 million for travel for the year 2020. Travel expenses went beyond the budgeted figures last year a large amount was spent on financing travel of various government officials.
