President Yameen rejected an offer to be freed from prison: Nasheed

Speaker of the Parliament President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom who is serving a 5-year jail sentence was offered the opportunity to free himself from prison. Nasheed also stated that President Yameen declined the offer.
Speaking to the press President Nasheed stated that he was immensely saddened and wept when President Yameen was sentenced to be imprisoned. He also stated that when he was sentenced to prison during President Yameen’s administration, he was offered the opportunity to choose his freedom and that he chose the offer provided for him.
While President Nasheed shared this information with the press, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla was said to have visited President Yameen in prison and offered him the opportunity to go abroad. However, according to reliable sources President Yameen had rejected the offer.
Speaking to the press President Nasheed further stated that he did not wish former President Yameen to be incarcerated.
