World Media Summit Opens in Beijing with Maldivian Delegation

Around 500 delegates representing 112 countries and regions have gathered in Beijing, China, for the official opening of the 7th World Media Summit, where a Maldivian delegation led by Public Service Media (PSM) Chairperson Aminath Namza is taking part.
Co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and the Beijing Municipal People's Government, the summit runs from November 5 to 9 under the theme "Media in the Intelligent Age: From Consensus to Action." Approximately 330 institutions—including global media organizations, research entities, government bodies, and international groups—are represented to discuss the rapid transformations artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies are bringing to the future of journalism.
Addressing a forum during the summit, PSM Chairperson Aminath Namza emphasized the necessity of keeping humanity at the center of AI system development. Highlighting the importance of raising public awareness around major technological shifts, she advocated for protecting small nations and their native languages from marginalization in an increasingly fast-paced digital era. Xinhua News Agency also spotlighted Namza's remarks in its summit reporting, noting the growing voice of small, developing nations in shaping norms for emerging technologies.
Alongside Namza, the Maldivian delegation includes PSM Executive Director and Company Secretary Abdulla Rameez, as well as Sun Siyam Media Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Asif.
Participation in the global gathering offers small island states like the Maldives a platform to share their unique experiences and challenges in international discussions on digital development and responsible AI adoption, while fostering stronger ties with global media networks.
