IGMH Admitted 500 Stroke Patients Last Year; One in Five Treated Under 45

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) admitted 500 patients for stroke treatment last year, with hospital statistics also showing that one in five people treated for the condition is under 45.
Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, IGMH consultant neurosurgeon Dr Ali Afee highlighted concerns about strokes among younger people. The hospital has treated patients as young as 16.
Dr Afee pointed to high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol as factors contributing to the growing burden of stroke among younger people in the Maldives and internationally.
He urged people to seek immediate medical attention if stroke symptoms appear, stressing that prompt treatment can improve outcomes.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Warning signs can include facial drooping, weakness and difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
Dr Afee said the severity of a stroke and the time needed for recovery vary between patients. While some recover relatively quickly, others require prolonged treatment and rehabilitation.
He emphasised that family involvement is particularly important when patients move from hospital care back home. Relatives should use the hospital stay to learn how to provide appropriate care, including feeding support and assistance with prescribed physiotherapy.
Establishing a clear care routine before discharge can help families support the patient’s continuing recovery, he said.
