President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government’s main hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), will begin providing eyewear services. This move follows the decision to increase Aasandha’s biennial allowance for prescription eyewear from MVR 1,000 to MVR 2,000, starting tomorrow.
Speaking in a special interview with state media, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of ensuring that this increased allowance is not exploited by private providers. He noted that eyewear often costs between MVR 2,000 and 4,000 in the private sector, forcing many citizens to pay a significant portion out of pocket.
The President said the inclusion of eyewear services at IGMH will allow citizens to access affordable, quality prescription glasses without being overcharged. "Private sector providers will have to compete with IGMH. They will have to provide the same quality of glasses and lenses in the private sector," he said.
He acknowledged that some businesses may be dissatisfied with the move, but stressed that protecting public interest is the priority. He said this step is in response to widespread complaints during his presidential campaign about inadequate Aasandha coverage and the high cost of eyewear.
President Muizzu reiterated that improving the healthcare sector remains one of his administration's top priorities, and highlighted that healthcare reform is interconnected with broader quality-of-life improvements.
