Four Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in the Maldives on suspicion of trafficking and attempting to smuggle a large quantity of illicit narcotics into the country, police confirmed on Monday.
According to Maldives Police Service, the suspects were identified as MD Jihad Bin Arif (20), MD Mizanoor Rahman (41), Mirza Al Ameen (30), and MD Arman Ali (21). All four men are citizens of Bangladesh.
The arrests were made following an intelligence-led controlled delivery operation conducted jointly by the Police Drug Enforcement Department, Counter Narcotics Intelligence, and Maldives Customs Service. The operation was launched after Customs authorities intercepted unaccompanied air luggage carrying 6.75 kilograms of narcotics imported into the country.
When presented before court for remand hearings, MD Mizanoor Rahman was ordered to remain in custody pending the conclusion of his trial. The court granted a 15-day remand extension for the remaining three suspects.
Police noted that the investigation into the smuggling network remains ongoing.
