Maldives Customs has intercepted a major drug smuggling attempt, seizing 18 kilograms of narcotics valued at approximately MVR 26 million during a special operation last night.
The drugs were discovered in an air cargo shipment originating from Bangalore, India. According to the Home Minister Ali Ihsan, the narcotics were concealed inside plastic plant pots and their components, and packed in over 30 separate packets. Customs has confirmed that the seized items tested positive for cannabinoids.
In a statement shared on social media, Minister Ihsan praised the Customs officers for their vigilance and commitment to safeguarding the nation's borders. He emphasized that the operation aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's directives to eliminate the drug menace from the country.
“I thank the Customs officers for their valuable hard work in fully protecting the country's borders, in line with the President's special directives, as part of the efforts to completely rid the Maldives of drugs,” said Ihsan.
The Minister further stated that the environment once conducive to drug traffickers is being dismantled and the law is catching up with those attempting to bring narcotics into the Maldives. Authorities have not yet disclosed any details regarding individuals connected to the case.
