Maldivian authorities have arrested a 44-year-old Brazilian man and a 39-year-old Maldivian national, Ahmed Hussain Farushan, in connection with a significant drug smuggling operation. The arrests followed a controlled delivery operation that uncovered over one kilogram of narcotics.
The Brazilian suspect is accused of smuggling drugs into the country by concealing 107 bullets of narcotics within his body. Evidence presented includes a CT scan, customs documentation, and visual proof of the drugs, which were retrieved during the operation.
Ahmed Hussain Farushan, the alleged recipient of the smuggled drugs, faces charges related to possession, use, and distribution of narcotics. A urine test conducted on Farushan tested positive for AMP, a narcotic substance, which, alongside police evidence, prompted the court to classify him as a threat to public safety.
The court has remanded both suspects in custody for five days, with their detention set to expire on Friday. Authorities believe the smuggling attempt was part of a larger operation orchestrated by a criminal organisation.
Investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement working to uncover additional connections to organised crime networks in the region.
