Australia Opens First Embassy in the Maldives

Australia has officially opened its first embassy in the Maldives, marking a significant milestone in the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.
The embassy, located at Hotel Jen in Malé, was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by senior officials from both countries. Maldivian Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr. Mariyam Mariya, speaking at the event, emphasized the long-standing relationship between the Maldives and Australia, describing it as one built on "trust and respect." She also highlighted Australia’s continued support in key areas such as maritime security, education, and health.
Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles, who also attended the opening, announced the donation of a vessel to assist in maintaining the safety and security of Maldivian waters. He added that the Australian Royal Navy is working to offer more training opportunities for Maldivians.
Australian Ambassador to the Maldives David Jessup noted that over 700 Maldivians have been trained in Australia, many of whom now serve in senior government and political roles.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Australia were established in 1974, and this year marks over 50 years of cooperation. The opening of the embassy signifies a new chapter in the deepening partnership between the two countries.
