President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his commitment to advancing the Maldives' digital transformation during a meeting held today with executives from TikTok.
The discussions focused on exploring potential collaborations between TikTok and the Maldivian government, as part of the administration’s broader strategy to digitalize the nation. The President outlined his vision for digital development and emphasized the importance of platforms like TikTok in enabling economic opportunity and innovation.
TikTok executives assured their support for the President’s vision and said they were open to working with the government to unlock the platform’s economic potential for Maldivians.
Yesterday, TikTok executives also held consultative talks with the Ministry of Economic Development.
Currently, creators in the Maldives are unable to monetize their content through TikTok. To qualify for TikTok’s Creator Marketplace—where creators can earn income through brand collaborations—users must have at least 10,000 followers and over 100,000 video views in the past 30 days.
As no revenue is being generated through TikTok in the Maldives at present, officials hope the new engagements may help pave the way for content monetization and digital entrepreneurship.
