The Maldives has initiated discussions with Switzerland-based Edelweiss Air to explore expanding and enhancing flight services to the island nation. The talks were held on the sidelines of the Internationale Tourismus-Börse (ITB) Berlin 2025, currently underway in Germany.
The ITB Berlin Fair, which commenced on 4 March and will run until 6 March, has brought together a Maldivian delegation led by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, alongside 200 representatives from 89 companies. The Maldives is actively engaging with international tourism stakeholders through various side events at the fair.
During a meeting with Edelweiss Air officials, discussions focused on increasing the airline’s flight frequency to the Maldives, particularly strengthening connectivity during the low tourism season. Currently, Edelweiss Air operates one weekly flight to the Maldives.
The Maldives’ continued participation in ITB Berlin reflects its commitment to maintaining its status as the World’s Leading Destination and boosting tourist arrivals from German-speaking markets. The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has played a key role in promoting the country at the fair, spearheading initiatives to strengthen partnerships with European tour operators, travel agents, and media.
According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives recorded 457,940 tourist arrivals as of 4 March this year. Germany and Switzerland remain among the top ten source markets, with 29,128 and 10,004 arrivals, respectively. Other European markets contributing significantly to arrivals include the United Kingdom (45,469), Italy (43,163), France (19,062), and Poland (10,512).
