Foreigners Hospitalized for Food Poisoning at Immigration Detention Center Released

Hulhumalé Hospital.
The Maldives Immigration has confirmed that 19 foreign detainees who were hospitalized for food poisoning at Hulhumalé Hospital have been treated and returned to the Immigration Detention Center.
A media official from Immigration told Dhiyares that the individuals' conditions had improved, and they were discharged after receiving medical attention. However, the specific cause of the food poisoning has not yet been determined.
Following the incident, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) expressed concern over detainees falling ill, stating that they are closely monitoring the situation. The commission emphasized the need to ensure proper food safety standards for those in detention.
It has been noted that food and beverage services at the Immigration Detention Center are outsourced to a third-party provider, and authorities are currently investigating the source of the food contamination.
The incident has raised further questions regarding detainee welfare and food safety standards at the center, with HRCM calling for preventative measures to avoid similar occurrences in the future.
