Hussain Firshan Appointed Interim President of The Democrats

The Democrats have elected Hussein Firushan, the former MP for Madaveli constituency, as their interim President. This decision was made during a National Assembly meeting convened following the resignation of Hassan Latheef from the party's presidency. Latheef stepped down after joining the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), leaving the position vacant.
The National Assembly held a vote to determine who would temporarily assume the role of President until a permanent leader is chosen. Firushan, one of the two Vice Presidents of the party, secured 29 votes, outpacing his fellow Vice President, Alaika Adnan, who received 14 votes.
In a statement, The Democrats confirmed that Firushan’s tenure as interim President will focus on overseeing party operations until a permanent President is elected. The Assembly also passed a resolution to hold the presidential election within 50 days to finalize leadership.
The meeting further addressed the party’s strategic direction, with a decision to initiate the development of a new governance framework for the Maldives.
This leadership transition marks a significant moment for The Democrats as they prepare for upcoming challenges and strive to strengthen their organisational structure.
