President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will undertake an official visit to Estonia from January 13 to 16, 2025, at the invitation of Estonian President Dr. Alar Karis. This visit, the first of its kind by a Maldivian President, is set to strengthen bilateral ties and explore collaborative opportunities in digital technology, e-governance, education, and climate change.
The visit highlights Estonia’s globally recognized expertise in digital transformation and governance. President Muizzu will engage with prominent Estonian leaders, including President Karis, Speaker of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar, and several ministers overseeing education, climate, health, justice, and digital affairs. Discussions will focus on Estonia's innovative approaches to technology and their potential applications in the Maldives.
In Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city and a hub of innovation, President Muizzu will visit the University of Tartu, renowned for its pioneering research and global contributions in clinical medicine. His engagements include exploring the Estonian Genome Database Centre, the Greenergy Data Centre, and discussions with Tartu's Mayor, Urmas Klaas.
President Muizzu will also meet with Estonia’s Digital Advisory Council, aiming to facilitate cooperation in digital transformation. Estonia is a leader in e-governance, known for its e-Residency program and advanced digital public services.
This visit aligns with President Muizzu’s vision to position the Maldives as a developed nation by 2040, with digital transformation as a key pillar. His administration targets the digital economy contributing up to 15% of GDP by 2030, supported by initiatives like the Digital Transformation Roadmap, an AI Readiness Assessment with UNESCO, and a National AI Masterplan.
Accompanying the President will be Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan, and senior officials, alongside a private delegation from the Maldivian tech community. This collaboration seeks to establish connections with Estonian institutions and companies, fostering innovation and knowledge-sharing.
