The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) intercepted a dinghy carrying three individuals of Somali origin approximately 10 nautical miles northwest of Fuvahmulah.
According to an official statement from the MNDF, the Coast Guard responded to reports of a suspicious vessel and located the skiff boat, which is commonly associated with Somali use. Upon inspection, the three men, believed to be Somali nationals, were found aboard the dinghy.
The vessel and its occupants were escorted to Fuvahmulah Harbour, where the Maldives Police Service took custody of them for further investigation. Although the circumstances surrounding their arrival in Maldivian waters remain unclear, authorities have yet to determine their intent or planned destination.
This interception follows a similar incident in June, when a dinghy carrying three Somali nationals was also reported near the Maldives. Somali individuals have been occasionally found in the region, often linked to piracy or drifting vessels, posing continued challenges for authorities in terms of identification and repatriation.
Both the MNDF and the Police Service have assured the public that the situation is being managed in line with national security protocols.
