MNU Partners with OTAM to Introduce Occupational Therapy Degree Programme

The Maldives National University (MNU) has partnered with the Occupational Therapy Association of Maldives (OTAM) to launch a four-year occupational therapy degree programme, marking a significant milestone in healthcare education in the Maldives. The agreement was formalized on December 16, with Vice-Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam and OTAM Chairperson Aminath Thooha Adhlee signing the partnership.
Set to commence during the second semester of 2025, this initiative addresses the severe shortage of occupational therapists in the country. According to Dr. Aishath Shanoora, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Maldives currently has very few professionals in the field. "The national university aims to fill this gap by prioritizing the training of technical experts in occupational therapy," she stated.
The programme has been meticulously designed in collaboration with technical experts and international universities and adheres to standards set by the World Federation of Occupational Therapy. It has received approvals from the Allied Health Council, the Maldives Qualification Authority, and the World Federation of Occupational Therapy, ensuring international recognition.
Dr. Shanoora emphasized the importance of these approvals, stating that they would foster stronger industry connections and enhance awareness about occupational therapy careers. OTAM Chairperson Adhlee highlighted the partnership's goal of increasing the number of occupational therapists in the Maldives. “We hope this programme will encourage more Maldivian students to enter this vital profession,” she said.
Occupational therapists play a critical role in improving individuals' independence and quality of life. They work in various settings, including hospitals, schools, and rehabilitation centres, offering therapeutic interventions, workplace consultations, and caregiver education.
This programme is a historic step for MNU, marking its first health science initiative approved to international standards.
