Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel Highlights Maldives-UN Partnership Ahead of 60th Anniversary

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel met with UN Resident Coordinator ad interim, Neils Scott, to discuss the enduring partnership between the Maldives and the United Nations. The meeting, held on December 16, 2024, focused on the milestones of their collaboration as the Maldives approaches the 60th anniversary of its UN membership.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Minister Dr. Khaleel expressed his gratitude for the pivotal role the UN has played in the Maldives’ development journey over the decades. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to support the nation’s progress and to commemorate this significant milestone in the Maldives-UN relationship.

The Maldives became a member of the United Nations on September 21, 1965, shortly after gaining independence. In its formative years, the UN provided essential development assistance, laying the foundation for the Maldives’ progress.
Over the years, the Maldives has emerged as a strong advocate on the global stage, championing critical issues such as climate action, human rights protection, and multilateral cooperation.
