President Ratifies Amendment to the Copyright and Related Rights Act

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment Bill to Law No. 2010/23 (Copyright and Related Rights Act), which was passed during the 56th session of the 20th People's Majlis on December 2, 2024. The amendment introduces key updates to the law to enhance copyright protections, expand usage exceptions, and address challenges in enforcement.
The changes include extending the duration of copyright protection from 50 years to 70 years and introducing exceptions for persons with disabilities and non-commercial research purposes. Additionally, the amendment elaborates on issues related to copyrighted works and related rights while providing clarity on enforcement mechanisms to protect creators and copyright owners.
The updated law ensures protection for literary and artistic works, performances, sound recordings, and broadcasts produced in the Maldives. It specifies that copyright is granted based on the creation of the work, regardless of its presentation, content, quality, or purpose. Furthermore, it empowers copyright owners to take legal action against any infringement or attempts to infringe their rights.
Following ratification, the amended law has been published in the Government Gazette. It is set to take effect three months from the date of ratification and publication.
