Marking National Fishermen’s Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the importance of recognizing fishermen’s vital role, calling it a national duty to honor their dedication.
The President announced that, starting today, payments for weighed fish will be deposited within 48 hours for fishing boats with accounts at the Bank of Maldives (BML). To reduce operational costs, fishermen can now access affordable fuel at State Trading Organisation (STO) rates from key locations across the Maldives, including facilities under the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO).
Additionally, the Government plans to grant legal status to fishermen, ensuring they receive benefits similar to employees in other sectors. Efforts to expand fish processing facilities, improve storage capacities, and open new international markets aim to boost income potential for the fisheries sector.
President Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to supporting fishermen, highlighting their invaluable contribution to the nation’s economy and heritage.
