Fishermen to Receive Payments Within 48 Hours Starting Tomorrow: President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that fishermen with Bank of Maldives (BML) accounts will receive payments for their catches within 48 hours, starting tomorrow. This development follows arrangements made with the Finance Ministry, Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO), and BML to expedite payment processing for fishing boats.
Speaking during his visit to K. Gaafaru, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the long-standing payment delays faced by fishermen. "Starting tomorrow, for any fishing boat with a BML account, we have arranged for the payment to be deposited within 48 hours of weighing their catch. God willing, from tomorrow onwards, I will be fulfilling my promise to the fishermen," he stated.
The President acknowledged the challenges encountered in implementing this initiative but confirmed that these obstacles had been resolved. He further highlighted that 38 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, which had been pending, has now been disbursed to fishermen’s accounts.
While the current system facilitates prompt payments for fishermen using BML accounts, President Muizzu also assured that efforts are underway to extend this arrangement to fishermen with accounts at the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) as soon as possible.
