The Government of Japan has officially handed over a state-of-the-art incinerator to the Holhudhoo Council under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) initiative. The handover ceremony, held on Holhudhoo Island, Noonu Atoll, marked a significant milestone in enhancing sustainable waste management on the island.
Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to Maldives, presented the incinerator to Mr. Rilwan Mohamed, President of the Holhudhoo Council. This development follows the signing of a grant agreement between the Embassy of Japan in Maldives and the Holhudhoo Council on January 6, 2020.
The project, funded by a grant of USD 301,755, enabled the procurement of the advanced incinerator from Thomas Technical Institute Co., Ltd, based in Okinawa, Japan. The facility boasts the capability to process a wide range of waste, including plastic, kitchen waste, medical waste, green waste, used oil, tires, and nappies, while maintaining smoke-free operations and cost-effective functionality.
This initiative aims to bolster the Holhudhoo Council’s ongoing efforts to improve waste management practices on the island, aligning with the broader goal of fostering sustainable development.
The GGP is part of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA) and has been implemented in the Maldives since 1996. It focuses on empowering grassroots communities in areas such as education, environment, health, transportation, and energy, contributing to the nation's long-term development goals.
The newly installed incinerator is expected to significantly advance Holhudhoo’s environmental efforts, addressing pressing waste disposal challenges and promoting a cleaner, greener future for the island.
