The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development has reported receiving 500 applications from a single country for admission to the Medical School under the Maldives National University (MNU). This was announced during a review of the ministry's achievements over the past year, with a focus on advancements in building human capital under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's leadership.
State Minister for Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, Dr. Abdulla Nazeer, highlighted the increasing interest in higher education in the Maldives from foreign students, as well as the growing number of Maldivian students pursuing studies abroad. The 500 applications submitted in January this year reflect the rising demand for educational opportunities in the Maldives.
Currently, the MNU Medical School prioritises enrolment for Maldivian students due to limited space and high local demand. However, the government plans to address these challenges by establishing a larger, state-of-the-art medical school in Hulhumalé, aimed at accommodating both local and international students.
Dr. Nazeer also outlined the government's ongoing efforts to introduce international student visas and draft legislation to facilitate easier access to education for foreign students. Additionally, a new accommodation facility is being developed in Hulhumalé to provide convenient housing for international students.
