President Muizzu Warns Against Judicial Interference by Political Appointees

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reiterated his firm stance on preserving judicial independence, stating that any political appointee found meddling in the judiciary would be removed from their position without delay.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of his administration, President Muizzu highlighted his government's dedication to ensuring a non-partisan judiciary, free from political influence. He emphasized that since his assumption of office, a clear directive had been issued to all political appointees to refrain from judicial interference.
“Should any individual appointed by me interfere in judicial matters, I urge the public to report it. Such behavior will not be tolerated. Any appointee found guilty of this will be immediately dismissed,” the President stated.
President Muizzu assured that punitive measures against such individuals would be administered within the judicial system rather than politically motivated actions. “Accountability will come through proper legal channels,” he added.
This strong assertion reflects growing concerns about the independence of the judiciary in the Maldives, a country that has seen controversies surrounding political influence on legal institutions in the past. By committing to uphold judicial integrity, the President aims to strengthen public trust in the legal system and his administration.
Observers view this declaration as a positive step in addressing perceptions of political overreach into the judiciary, a recurring issue in Maldivian politics.
