Maldives Targets Record-Breaking 2.2 Million Tourists in 2025, Bolstered by New Airport Terminal

The Maldivian government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 2.2 million tourists in 2025, marking a milestone in the nation’s thriving tourism industry. This projection is outlined in the proposed 2025 state budget, which also anticipates a total of 14.2 million tourist bed-nights. As the government nears its 2024 goal of 2 million tourist arrivals, next year’s target reflects optimism for continued growth.
Central to this plan is the imminent completion and operation of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). Spanning 78,000 square meters and equipped with cutting-edge facilities, the terminal is designed to accommodate up to 7 million passengers annually—a significant upgrade from the existing terminal, which supports 1.5 million passengers. The new terminal will feature aero boarding bridges, advanced baggage handling systems, as well as extensive space for food, beverage, retail, and lounge services, providing tourists with an elevated travel experience.
The government views the upgraded VIA terminal as a key component in meeting and exceeding tourism goals by enhancing airport capacity and ensuring a world-class arrival experience for all visitors. With final preparations underway, the terminal is set to be a transformative addition to the Maldives’ tourism infrastructure, supporting sustainable growth and accommodating rising demand.
