Maldives Confirms $1.25 Million Donation to Palestinian Refugee Aid

The Maldives government has released official documentation verifying the transfer of $1.25 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), following opposition claims that funds raised for Palestinian aid had not been sent. The Ministry of External Affairs disclosed this information in a statement issued late last night, accompanied by a copy of the "debit advice" for the August 20 transfer, confirming the deposit into UNRWA's designated account for Palestine.
The funds were raised through a national telethon, "Maldivians with Palestine," held on June 12 and led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The event generated $1,248,826.56, a total later confirmed by audit firm Crow Maldives LLP. In its statement, the Ministry emphasized that discussions were held with UNRWA regarding specific programs and projects to ensure effective use of the funds. This significant donation highlights the Maldives' longstanding support for Palestinian rights and is seen as a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people in their time of need.
The Maldives government also reiterated its condemnation of what it described as "ethnic cleansing" and violations of international law by Israel against the Palestinian people. The government’s stance reflects a commitment to supporting Palestine on humanitarian grounds amid rising regional tensions.
