Foreign Ministry Rejects Reports of Consulates in Addu

The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed reports circulating in some media outlets and on social media claiming that the Maldives is establishing a consulate in Bengaluru, India, while India is setting up a consulate in Addu City.
In a statement, the ministry said the reports are inaccurate and clarified that the Maldivian government has not yet made any specific decision on establishing a foreign country’s consulate in an island other than the capital, Malé.
The ministry said establishing a foreign consulate outside Malé is a matter that would require broad consultations involving all relevant stakeholders before any decision is taken.
The Foreign Ministry’s latest statement indicates that no final decision has been made by the Maldivian government regarding the establishment of such a consulate in Addu City.
The ministry also urged the media and social media users to share accurate and responsible information, stressing the importance of ensuring public awareness and social harmony.
